Fontana Dam is located in Graham County, North Carolina. It forms Fontana Lake, some 29 miles of beauty on the southern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains. The Appalachian Trail crosses Fontana Dam as it winds its way from Georgia to Maine. Roadways in the area have a world-wide reputation in sports car and motorcycle circles. Highway 28 through Fontana, Highway 129 crossing Deal's Gap (Tail of the Dragon), and Highway 143 (Cherohala Skyway) also offer scenic views ranging from forest to mountain vistas. Fontana and Santeetlah Lake attract boaters and fishermen. These lakes are never crowded and the natural settings calm the senses. Camping, hiking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and horseback riding are some of the most popular things to do. Mountain streams are where the fly fishermen will fulfill their dreams. The much sought after native trout are abundant in these waters. Hunters gather here in season to hunt bear, wild boar, and turkey. The Fontana/Graham County area is a natural playground. Forget the theme parks and other man-made attractions. Come to where the real action is. Visit Graham County on your next vacation. |
